Looking through a kaleidoscope

Last year Santa brought us a simple kaleidoscope and the kids immediately fell in love with it. They constantly look through it and project its beautiful images onto the wall.

For quite some time I was wondering how I could catch the images long enough to observe and draw them, and a couple of days ago I had an idea: "What if I try to take a picture through the eye piece with my phone". And it worked! The images I made are unbelievable.

We observed them carefully and then the kids tried to draw them. I was totally blown away by how even little Ema Nina observed, listened and got engaged. First we drew the shapes with a pencil and then they coloured them with glitter watercolours. Filip and Zoja even used a black marker to trace the pencil lines. At the end of this beautiful activity Zoja said: "Hey, this is actually a mandala!" And she was totally on the spot :-)

While I find the finished results breathtaking, I wish we had a little more time. I would love to include more details and I wished I could talk to Filip more about symmetry and shapes of patterns.
